Nest & Neighbors: Math Speaks
Nest DC
Every so often, you run into an organization that completely flips the script on how we learn, grow, and connect in this city. That is exactly what’s happening over at
Math Speaks Inc.. Operating right in our backyard, this dedicated team is dismantling the old, intimidating stereotypes of equations and algorithms, replacing them with culturally rich, hands-on experiences that make STEM feel like home for DC youth.
They aren't just teaching formulas. They're building a generation of kids who walk into their classrooms knowing they belong. We sat down with their team to talk about the joy of the breakthrough, representation in STEM, and how we can all cheer them on as they move through their busy season of competitions and camps. Enjoy!

Q: Let’s start with the big picture. What is the heartbeat behind Math Speaks Inc.?
A: “Math Speaks, Inc. is a Washington, DC–based nonprofit dedicated to helping students build confidence, identity, and joy in mathematics. At our core, we believe math is more than numbers; it’s a language for understanding the world and a tool for unlocking opportunity.
We create hands-on, culturally responsive STEM experiences through afterschool programs, math competitions, summer camps, and family engagement that allow students to explore, create, and see themselves as capable problem solvers. At the heart of our work is a simple belief: every child can excel in math when given the right support, exposure, and encouragement.”
Q: When you look at the landscape of education in DC right now, what is the specific gap you are moving to fill?
A: “We’re seeing that many students, especially in underserved communities, don’t lack ability; they lack access and confidence. Too often, math is taught in a way that feels disconnected from students’ lives, leading to early disengagement and self-doubt.
Math Speaks fills that gap by creating spaces where math feels alive, relevant, and empowering. We focus not just on skill-building, but on identity, helping students believe ‘I am good at math’ and ‘I belong in STEM.’ That shift changes everything.”
Q: Who are the kids you are designing these programs for, and what does this shift look like in their day-to-day lives?
A: “We show up for students across Washington, DC, primarily in Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8, who may not otherwise have access to enriching STEM opportunities outside of school.
For many of our students, Math Speaks is where they experience math differently: by building, experimenting, collaborating, and even competing. It becomes a space where they feel successful, seen, and challenged in the best way. That confidence carries back into their classrooms and shapes how they see themselves as learners.”
Q: You all are doing heavy lifting in the community. What is a milestone or moment that makes you pause and feel proud?
A: “We’re especially proud of the confidence our students walk away with. In our programs, 100% of students report increased interest in STEM, and nearly all say they feel more capable of tackling challenging math.
We’re also proud of building signature experiences like our Math Masters Competition, which brings together elementary students across DC in a high-energy, team-based math event. Seeing students cheer each other on, take risks, and celebrate math is something we don’t take for granted.”
Q: We love to mark our calendars. Any dates or programs should the neighborhood have on its radar?
A: “Yes! We are excited about our Summer Math Academy and Girls STEM Weekend BootCamp, both of which began in June. We’re also expanding our afterschool and summer programming, particularly in Wards 7 and 8, bringing more hands-on STEM opportunities directly into communities that need them most in the Fall.
Follow along on our socials to stay in the loop on upcoming opportunities and events!”
Q: For the neighbors reading this who want to jump in and support, what do you need most right now?
A: “There are a few meaningful ways to support:
- Donate: Help us keep our high-quality STEM programming completely free for DC students.
- Volunteer: Show up and support the energy at events like our Math Masters Competition or within our regular programs.
- Partner: We are always looking to connect with schools, local organizations, and corporate sponsors.
- Spread the Word: Simply sharing our mission with your network helps us connect with more families who could benefit from what we do.”
Q: What does it mean to you to do this work specifically within the fabric of Washington, DC?
A: “Being part of the DC community means showing up with purpose. This city is rich in culture, history, and resilience—and our work is rooted in honoring that. We’re not just serving the community—we’re part of it. Many of our students, families, and partners reflect the very neighborhoods we’re working in. That connection drives us to create programs that are not only impactful, but meaningful and relevant.”
Q: When the calculators are put away and you need a quiet moment to recharge, where is your go-to spot in the city?
A: “When I need a reset, I love spending time at The Wharf. There’s something about being near the water that helps you slow down and think clearly.”

When we show kiddos that their minds are built for discovery, we shift what they believe is possible for their futures.
Math Speaks Inc. is doing the heart-work of ensuring every child in our city has the tools, the team, and the confidence to stand tall in STEM. We are so proud to have them in our corner of DC.
